Meat Workers To Plan Campaign Tomorrow

Meat Workers Union (MWU)

Tuesday 6 March, 2012 at 15:45pm

AFFCO union delegates will meet in Taupo tomorrow to discuss a campaign against the Talley's lockout of 1,000 AFFCO workers.

Talley's locked out 750 workers indefinitely at five of its eight North Island plants last Wednesday. The company locked out a further 200 workers today at the Rangiuru freezing works near Te Puke. Two other plants in Wiri, Auckland and Napier have not been affected by the lockout.

Delegates will attend the conference from the six affected freezing works in Moerewa, Horotiu, Rangiuru, Wanganui, Feilding and Wairoa as well as workers from Wiri and Napier which are not affected by the lockout.

The campaigning conference will be held on Wednesday 7 March, at the Lakeland Resort Taupo on 383 Lake Terrace Inn (State Highway One) at Two Mile Bay. The conference will start at 11am and go through the night. Media are welcome to film some of the meeting.

The union is also planning to hold a press conference on Thursday 8 March in Taupo to announce the union's plans. The time has not yet been confirmed.

A campaign will likely include further solidarity strikes, workers seeking support from the small communities which rely on their incomes, and nationwide fundraising
