Waikato Tainui Te Kauhanganui Incorporated
Media Statement
20 February 2012
On behalf of Waikato Tainui Te Kauhanganui ('Tribal Parliament'), the newly elected and constituted Officers of Te Kauhanganui announce the following:
• As prescribed by the Rules governing Te Kauhanganui, the tenure of the former executive members of Te Arataura, which includes Mr Tukoroirangi Morgan, expired as at 12 February 2012, following the Triennial Special Meeting of Te Kauhanganui duly convened for the purpose of electing a new executive committee. Mr Morgan failed in four ballots to achieve the 50% voting threshold (i.e. 33 total marae votes) required to cement his re-election as a member of Te Arataura.
• In this context, Mr Morgan does not represent the views of Te Kauhanganui. Further, the Officers issue a warning to Mr Morgan that in his capacity as a marae representative of Te Hoe o Tainui Marae and therefore a Member of Te Kauhanganui, he is acting in a manner that has brought or likely to bring Waikato Tainui Te Kauhanganui Incorporated into disrepute.
• A process to fill the eleventh vacant position on Te Arataura in accordance with the Rules, will be determined by Te Kauhanganui at the next general meeting set down for Saturday 31 March 2012.
