Maritime Union welcomes new port stakeholder group

Maritime Union welcomes new port stakeholder group

16 February 2012

The Maritime Union has welcomed the announcement of a new port stakeholder group in Auckland today calling for a new approach to port management in the city.

The group takes in diverse community interests including business, workers and recreational users of the port.

Maritime Union National President Garry Parsloe says the initiative is a positive response to the concerns of many Aucklanders around issues like investment and growth of the port, and environmental and labour concerns.

"Debate is needed on the direction the port is going and it is important Aucklanders are having a say on their own asset."

The Maritime Union agreed there needed to be a "triple bottom line" approach to running the port that included the social responsibility of the port to its employees, recognizing that casualization of the workforce was a negative approach.
