International Transport Workers Federation backs MUNZ strike

Statement: ITF backs MUNZ strike notice
The ITF has spoken out to voice its support for New Zealand’s MUNZ maritime union as it places a new seven day full strike notice on the Ports of Auckland (POAL). Strike action would start 7am on 24 February 2012.
ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) dockers’ section secretary Frank Leys stated: “Three weeks ago we warned POAL’s management that the port was teetering on the brink of crisis. Their failure to seek a negotiated settlement is bringing that crisis closer.”
He continued: “POAL is trying to steamroller the port’s workers into submission. Today’s strike notice shows they’ve failed. The only way this situation is going to be solved is by POAL joining the union in a genuine dialogue. They have to do it, and do it now.”
