Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade comment on Jarle Andhoey

Norwegian Jarle Andhoey arrived in New Zealand in early January 2012 and failed to declare, as required, that he had previously been deported from Canada.

The Norwegian Government has notified Antarctic Treaty Parties that it is concerned that Mr Andhoey may be planning another voyage to the Ross Sea, and have advised that no expedition has been authorised by them as required by Norwegian law.

The New Zealand Customs Service is seeking information on the vessel Nilaya’s location.

The Southern Ocean is one of the most remote and inhospitable areas in the world and New Zealand government agencies are obviously concerned about any possibility that there could be a repeat of last year’s events in the Ross Sea.

Mr Andhoey’s voyage to Antarctica in 2011 resulted in the loss of the yacht Berserk II and three of its crew. A week-long international search and rescue operation, coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre of New Zealand, covered more than 25,000 square kilometres, in often-treacherous seas and 180km/h winds.
