Electoral Roll Opens Next Week for Maori Representation Poll
The Waikato District Council is holding a poll to see whether it should introduce Maaori wards for the next two elections in 2013 and 2016. The council has the opportunity to introduce three Maaori councillors (based on there being a total of 14 councillors at present) depending on the outcome of the poll.
The poll is being held by postal vote on Wednesday 4 April 2012.
Those eligible to vote at the poll are all resident and non-resident ratepayer electors whose names appear on the electoral roll for the Waikato District Council.
The preliminary electoral roll will be available for public inspection at the council offices and libraries from Tuesday 17 January to Tuesday 14 February 2012. Please visit www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz for office locations and opening hours.
Voting packs will then be posted to all eligible electors from Tuesday 13 March 2012 with voting closing at noon on Wednesday 4 April 2012.
The poll is being conducted under the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the result will be binding on the Waikato District Council for at least the next two elections (2013 and 2016).
For more information on this poll, please contact the electoral officer, Waikato District Council, telephone 0800 492 452.
