CTU Welcomes Shearer
The Council of Trade Unions has welcomed the election of David Shearer as leader of the Labour Party, with Grant Robertson as his Deputy.
Peter Conway, CTU Secretary, said today that the CTU is not affiliated to the Labour Party but has a great interest in any party that stands for decent jobs for New Zealanders, values fairness in the economy and will promote sustainable development.
“From 2000 to 2008 we saw the importance of the Labour Party combining with other parties in Parliament to reduce income inequality, lift wages, massively reduce unemployment and support positive rights for working people such as paid parental leave.”
“We recognise that David Shearer wants to reach out to a broad cross section of Kiwis and I am sure that workers up and down the country would like to discuss their issues with him.”
“We will assist with that in any way we can.”
