MEDIA RELEASE
Tuesday, 8 November 2011

Te Tai Tokerau Election Debate – Live on Maori Television

The battle for Te Tai Tokerau is set to heat up on Monday, 14 November at 8.30pm with a live debate on Maori Television between political rivals Hone Harawira, Kelvin Davis and Waihoroi Shortland.

NATIVE AFFAIRS – KOWHIRI 11, Maori Television’s election series, will broadcast the debate between the three key candidates for Te Tai Tokerau live from Northland College in Kaikohe.

Harawira holds the Te Tai Tokerau seat for the Mana Party with a majority of 1117 votes after winning the by-election in June. The upcoming election is expected to be another close race with Harawira’s main challengers for the seat, Labour’s Kelvin Davis and the Maori Party’s Waihoroi Shortland, polling strongly.

Hosted by Julian Wilcox, the Te Tai Tokerau debate will focus on issues including the splitting of the Maori vote, Ngapuhi settlement, unemployment and education.

NATIVE AFFAIRS – KOWHIRI 11 is the only national current affairs programme that will broadcast live from each of the seven Maori electorates in a series of “town hall” debates.

The “town hall” debates screen on Mondays at 8.30pm and Wednesdays at 9.00pm in the build up to polling day. The next debate takes place in Ngaruawahia for the Hauraki-Waikato electorate on Wednesday, 16 November at 9.00pm.
