Maxim Institute Recommends a Voting System

In September we released a paper called Kicking the Tyres: Choosing a voting system for New Zealand which took a neutral stance on the referendum, by evaluating all the voting systems on offer. We have spent the past month getting the paper into as many hands as possible, urging people to learn about the systems and make up their minds about which one they think is best.

Now, a month later, we are releasing two more papers that state our recommendations about which voting system is best, and how MMP could be improved if it is kept. We have assessed all the systems on offer against a range of criteria that are needed for a good voting system and have made our own judgement calls about how those criteria should be prioritised.

One paper recommends Supplementary Member (SM) as the best system on offer at the referendum. The paper is titled “A Better Mix: Why SM strikes the best balance and should be New Zealand’s voting system.”

The second paper examines ways that MMP could be improved and is titled “Enhancing MMP: How to improve New Zealand’s current voting system.”
