Hetty The Hen Versus The Hen Guy
Hetty The Hen Versus The Hen Guy
A classic battle of good versus evil will take place today when Hetty, New Zealand's ex-battery hen mascot, challenges her arch-enemy, the Egg Guy.
The Egg Guy is the television front person of the New Zealand egg industry, peddling eggs on their behalf.
The Egg Guy is at Wellington's Midland Park today to celebrate World Egg Day, a self-proclaimed day established by the industry to promote their cruelly produced eggs.
Hetty, flanked by New Zealand's most outspoken advocate for animals, SAFE director Hans Kriek, will confront and challenge the Egg Guy with the terrible conditions suffered by three million caged hens on battery farms in New Zealand.
Speaking on behalf of Hetty prior to the event, Mr Kriek says, "Celebrating eggs while millions of hens suffer a life of abject misery, is simply obscene. Eight out of ten New Zealanders want battery cages banned and the time has come for the industry to listen, and move away from this outdated and cruel production system.
"Hetty intends to expose the reality of egg production in this country and will make sure consumers are not hoodwinked by the Egg Guy's promotional spin. Nearly 90 per cent of the eggs produced in New Zealand come from caged hens who are suffering every day of their lives. The egg industry has absolutely no right to be celebrating," says Mr Kriek.
SAFE has launched World Egg-Free Day to protest World Egg Day and is encouraging its supporters and 8,000 Facebook fans to bake cakes and other sweet treats without eggs as a show of protest.
PROTEST ACTION ON NOW Hetty the hen will confront Egg Guy in Midland Park (on Lambton Quay) at 11.30am today. Be early for ringside seats!
