Shine And Family Works Northern Partner to Stop Domestic Abuse

In a significant new partnership, Shine and Family Works Northern have undertaken to work together to make a bigger difference in reducing domestic abuse in families.

The two social service agencies have primarily complementary services which together will offer a continuum of services from crisis intervention to medium-term follow up with families under the new Shine with Family Works partnership.

“Domestic abuse is a very complex issue and we recognize that there is no single answer”, says Jane Drumm, Executive Director of Shine. “We believe that together Shine with Family Works can achieve more to increase the safety of a significant proportion of families experiencing abuse.”

Services offered by Shine with Family Works will include crisis advocacy, social work, counselling and educative programmes for children, women and men.

“Together, Shine with Family Works provides the ability for increased capacity and expertise as well as a wider geographic spread by utilising Family Works Northern’s network of centres throughout the upper North Island,” says Laurie Pedlar, General Manager of Family Works Northern. “This will allow for a greater reach of specialist domestic abuse intervention services, supporting more families in need.”

Using the highly credible Results Based Accountability (RBA) model of research, Shine with Family Works will be closely monitoring the outcomes of services, and determining what’s working to reduce domestic abuse in families.

“Our objective is to achieve measureable change in the wellbeing and safety of families/whanau experiencing domestic abuse and we will be continually researching, developing and providing comprehensive information on trends and outcomes,” says Drumm.

The Shine with Family Works partnership was announced at Family Works Leslie Centre’s centenary event on Friday 30th, which was attended by the Rt Hon John Key.
