Our Children are Facing Increasing Sexualisation

"Do you want your 14 year old daughter or grand-daughter to be taught in our schools how to apply "yucky and sticky
condoms to a black plastic penis?" asks outraged grandmother Simonne Dyer deputy leader of the Kiwi Party after reading
the lead story in this morning's Herald.
"Parents have a hard enough time instilling good family values into their growing children without their being taught
and encouraged by their school teachers to explore their sexuality and engage in sexual activity. How many of our
schools teach an abstinence programme that statistics from overseas' studies reveal a delay in sexual involvement?
"We are already among the highest rates in the OECD of teenage pregnancy and abortion, sexually transmitted diseases,
and suicide. We are constantly told that the sex education in our schools is to help combat these distressing statistics
but surely commonsense tells us that our programmes have gone far past the good basic education that is needed, and now
its contents encourage sexual curiosity and experimentation among our teenagers when they are still learning how to cope
with their emotional development.
"Peer pressure is huge at this age. How many teenagers have been coerced into sexual activity before being emotionally
equipped to manage this most intimate of human relationships? How many of our young suicide victims have been influenced
by the trauma of dealing with the complicated emotions that result from a relationship breakdown?
"In a majority of communities parents are not being consulted as to the content of the sex education teaching in their
schools. Its time to re-evaluate the values and content of what is being taught to our young and vulnerable children and
teenagers", concluded Dyer
