Wellington Hawke’s Bay Conservation Board Appointments 2011

Two new members have been appointed to the Wellington Hawke’s Bay Conservation Board by the Minister of Conservation Hon Kate Wilkinson, bringing with them a wealth of experience and expertise.

Dr Jonathan Procter, a lecturer in Earth Science at Massey University, Palmerston North and Richard Steedman, a Strategic Development Manager with Otaihape Maori Komiti Inc Taihape, have both served on other conservation boards, and offered a range of invaluable skills, Department of Conservation (DOC) Wellington Hawke’s Bay Conservator Alan McKenzie said.

Dr Procter, a member of the Taranaki/Whanganui Conservation Board from 2003 to 2009, has worked within the environmental policy, natural resource management and iwi development areas for Tanenuiarangi Manawatu Inc the iwi authority of Rangitaane O Manawatu.

“Over the past 10 years Jonathan has developed a sustainable environmental centre within the iwi, undertaking a range of tasks from education, monitoring, cultural impact assessment, resource management and articulation of cultural values within the Manawatu,” Mr McKenzie said.

Richard Steedman, a member of the Taranaki/Whanganui Conservation Board since 2008, is a member of the four Iwi Runanga of the confederated Iwi of Mokai patea (Central and Upper Rangitikei).

“He is also involved in many conservation projects, especially around bringing iwi and community involvement and economic sustainability.”

Kevin Trerise, Havelock North, who currently chairs the board, has been reappointed for another term.

A self employed business coach and personal mentor since 2005, Kevin brings a deep appreciation of conservation matters and long experience of community involvement promoting environmental sustainability as chairman of Sustaining Hawke’s Bay Trust, and as current national board member of Sustainable Aotearoa NZ.

Mr McKenzie thanked outgoing board members Helen Algar and Ra Pomare. Helen chaired the board for three years during three terms on the board.

Ms Wilkinson said she was pleased to see the commitment to working for conservation shown by those who had taken up board membership. ENDS
