Energy strategies balanced, forward-looking
National strategies released today for energy and energy efficiency show a balanced approach, says BusinessNZ.
“We are fortunate as a nation to have a strong endowment of hydro and other renewable energy along with significant oil, gas and coal resources,” said BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly.
“This places us in a good position to build on our position as one of the world’s leaders in renewable energy while responsibly developing our petroleum resources to grow our economy.
“Business will welcome the Government’s portfolio approach that includes all energy resources in the mix while further developing renewables and supporting new green technologies.
“Also welcome is the focus on competitive markets to keep down energy prices for consumers. Bringing efficiency and energy strategies together will also help this.
“New Zealand businesses have opportunities around increasing energy productivity, developing new energy-related technologies and making better use of energy in construction, manufacturing, transport and other areas.
“One test of the success of the energy strategies released today will be the extent of businesses’ ability to get resource consents and permits and invest in a way that creates jobs and benefits local communities,” Mr O’Reilly said.
