Auckland’s Spotlight On Housing Week

Auckland’s Spotlight On Housing Week delivers different perspective on housing

Auckland’s Spotlight On Housing Week, which runs till this Friday 1 July, is a unique event in New Zealand that continues to be a standout model of housing advocacy at its best, says Community Housing Aotearoa.

“The Spotlight On Housing event doesn’t just raise awareness around housing in West Auckland, it also introduces a wider, much-needed perspective on housing,” says David McCartney, Executive Officer of Community Housing Aotearoa.

“The standout thing about this event is that it puts so many practical actions together – from collections of winter essentials like blankets, curtains, and duvets through to the Pop Up Shop in Henderson where people get to talk about everything about housing from renting or flatting or buying, to insulation, landlords, heating and energy saving.

“Spotlight On Housing demonstrates that housing is so much more than a matter of what’s happening in the real estate market – it’s about real people, real lives and the very real needs for housing that is affordable, safe, peaceful and healthy,” says David McCartney.

“Too often housing issues exist on the fringes of public awareness. The other great thing about the Spotlight On Housing Week then is that it brings out a creative perspective on those issues and a real sense of collaboration between the many groups who work at the ‘frontline’ of housing needs.

“This year, for instance there has been a performance of Homeless Economics, a show from the Auckland Fringe Festival earlier this year which was a collaboration between the Auckland City Mission and Hobson Street Theatre Company.

“For its part, Community Housing Aotearoa has been proud this year to work with the Housing Call 2 Action group in the production of a DVD about an ‘Outrageous Bus Tour’ of housing in West Auckland that is being shown for the first time this week. The DVD is a credit to everyone involved and the creative input of Sunyard Productions”.

Note: This week in Auckland the Auckland City Mission is running its Orange Day food collection for parcels to pass on to families needing help this winter. For more information see www.aucklandcitymission.org.nz
