The Graf
Boys
1080 was the subject of meetings held by United
Future, in Turangi and Taupo, on Friday.
"The
overwhelming number of those present were opposed to 1080,"
said Clyde Graf. "Many of those at the Turangi meeting were
infuriated after recent drops around Lake Taupo, and the
Tongariro River. The drops were close to homes, and baits
were found around waterways."
The local police sergeant addressed the crowd and told of the traumatic death of his dog after another drop around Lake Rotoaira, about two months ago. Local landowner, David Livingston, said he and others were taking legal action against the trustees who permitted one of the drops, without landowner approval."
The people attending the meeting were informed that by giving their party vote to United Future, they would give a vote to end 1080 use in New Zealand. By doing this, they could make good use of both of their votes under the current MMP structure.
When asked for a tangible example of how the banning of 1080 could be achieved, Mr Dunne said that an international, independent review into the use of 1080 would be a likely first step.
Clyde Graf agreed that an
international review by an independent panel would be a
great start.
"It would allow a focused, critical,
independent scientific investigation, and give the people of
New Zealand an opportunity to have a credible review of the
information and research available. It would be important
that qualified, unbiased scientists were selected. It should
be binding, and if a moratorium were recommended, that
recommendation should then be acted upon."
"The public of
New Zealand are not being informed about the risks
associated with 1080 use, and they need to be.
We are
being injected with only one side of the story, and that
side is from the users of 1080."
To get a clear picture of
the issues around the use of 1080, people can, for a short
