Hannah Tamaki for President
14th June 2011 After careful consideration and much encouragement from her branch members, Hannah Tamaki has put her name forward for the selection of the next Maori Women’s Welfare League president. “As a mother of three and a grandmother of ten, I feel very privileged to be a member of the League which my mother joined when I was a small girl.” Numerous women in my extended whanau have been affiliated to the League and it is partly because of them that I have put my name forward for the presidency. But the main reason why I am seeking selection is because I feel that I can make a positive contribution to the organisation and the lives of Maori women and their whanau. I am confident that I have the necessary skills that are required in the role of president and I'm keen to take on the challenge.
I am passionate about improving the lives of all women and because I am Maori, I therefore have a particular interest in the well being of Maori women and their families. She says that her strengths are in leadership, inspiring, empowering and motivating men, women and whanau. “As a pastor of the Destiny Church, I am aware not only of their hardships and needs but also their potential to enjoy a decent standard of living.”
During the past two years, Hannah has been instrumental in building the League’s membership considerably. “We have grown the membership within Auckland and have registered 300 members in that time. Our branch members understand the value of the League for themselves and their whanau and are very committed to the kaupapa of the League. I am proud of the work that we have been doing in our branches and we intend to build on that in the coming years.”
The League president is selected by branch votes and this year there are eight nominees two of whom are from Auckland. The successful candidate will be announced at the League’s annual conference at Pukemokimoki marae, Napier, 31st August to 3rd September.
