Your NZ Confirms Dunedin North Candidate
Emerging party Your NZ highlights it’s “seriously different” tag with confirmation on the Dunedin North seat. What had been seen as a probable mundane stroll to Labour success now has a wild card added to the mix.
Your NZ confirmed they will stand candidate Pete George in Dunedin North. He will be promoting himself and party as a real alternative, offering significant points of difference and an innovative approach to communication with the electorate.
The campaign will be offering Pete George as a candidate who can dedicate himself to give priority to representing the electorate and to parliamentary duties without the distraction of the party duties the traditional candidates have.
Pete George will introduce the Your NZ Interactive Democracy model that combines:
- regular monthly public meetings
- website news, information and reports on issues related to Dunedin North
- continuous blogs for discussions with constituents
- online and electorate based polls (and possibly referenda) to gauge electorate preferences
The Your NZ candidate pledge will also differentiate George’s approach. It promises:
- the interests of the electorate come first (the party doesn’t dictate)
- parliamentary votes on issues relevant to the electorate will reflect the majority wishes of the electorate (except in exceptional cases)
Pete George acknowledges that Dunedin North is a Labour stronghold but sees an opening for change with the retirement of incumbent Pete Hodgson and a spread of votes amongst three other main party candidates who are current list MPs.
Pete George will also campaign for Dunedin to stand up and be noticed, to make it’s votes count far more than automatic support for Labour offers. The city could benefit enormously in exposure and representation if the voters had the courage to make it a pivotal seat.
At the very least this will inject another dimension of interest into what otherwise looked like a nondescript campaign for the city.
