Bringing Us Closer Together
Thursday 1 June
The NZ Council of Christian Social Services (NZCCSS) launches Closer Together Whakatata Mai at the Downtown Community Ministry (DCM) offices this morning.
The Closer Together Whakatata Mai project highlights the impact of inequality in New Zealand.
“Twenty years ago, New Zealand was one of the most equal countries in the economically developed world, but that is no longer the case. It’s very important to change the mainstream perspective about economic and social disparity”, says Ruby Duncan, president of NZCCSS.
NZCCSS is supporting regional networks to organise events and meetings over the next few months. They also want to collect more than 5,000 signatures, either online or by postcard.
The postcard message urges politicians and decision makers to work towards policies that reduce income inequality and bring people together. The postcards include free postage and will be available widely in the community.
“We are holding the launch at DCM, not only to show our support for their work, but also to highlight the increasing pressure on social services. DCM provides holistic, long-term support, and as statistics are showing, there is an increase in demand for these types of services,” says Jo Paku, events coordinator at NZCCSS.
The launch will include a range of speakers, from both NZCCSS and DCM. The DCM Ukelele Group will also makes their debut public appearance.
