Empty deckchairs to represent NZ Post management

Empty deckchairs to represent NZ Post management at Dunedin petition handover

Media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday 27 May 2011

New Zealand Post management are to be represented by empty deckchairs at petition handover at the Dunedin Metro Post Shop and Kiwibank (in the Exchange) at 12 noon today Friday 27 May 2011.

The campaign to Save Dunedin Post Shop and Kiwibank has collected 2000 signatures in the last two weeks from local customers demanding that their post shop be kept open, plus another 100 online signatures and over 100 signed letters.

However, New Zealand Post management have refused to front up and have instead told us to post the petitions to them – from a post office they are about to close.

Campaign spokesperson Victor Billot says that the two deckchairs will be reserved for any New Zealand Post management who attend the handover – and if they do not attend, the empty seats will be a symbol of NZ Post management's casual attitude towards customers and shareholders of New Zealand Post, the people of New Zealand.

Mr Billot says all local customers are invited to turn up for the ceremony, and local councillors, MPs and other representatives have been invited to show their support.

"We even repeated our invitation to New Zealand Post management. How hard can it be to have a senior manager turn up to collect the petitions, even if it just a sign of respect for 2000 plus customers concerned about their decision?"

Mr Billot says there has been a lot of confusion about the closure, with one local MP who has a PO Box at Dunedin Metro concerned that he had not been notified about any changes.

"We challenge New Zealand Post to stop the closure and give a six month review period where customers can show their support for their post office."
