Children in care package welcomed
Children in care package welcomed
May 20, 2011 - Children’s Commissioner John Angus says the additional funding to meet the health and education needs of children in care is long overdue but very welcome.
“Good on the Government for recognising the importance of meeting the health and education needs of some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable children and young people.
“It’s a step that is long overdue - but very necessary and welcome,” he said.
“Many of the children placed into the care of the state have complex health and education needs. Meeting these needs is the most basic, yet effective way to make sure their well-being improves.
“I’m pleased to hear these pilot assessments will soon be rolled out across the country, with more children and young people able to access the service.
“I also welcome the announcement of more funding for mental health services for children in care. Many of these vulnerable children and young people have high needs and require specialist attention. It’s good to see recognition of this.
“This announcement has addressed several of the important recommendations we made in a major report completed last year on children in care.”
