‘Step up’ for Youth Week says Age
Concern
Age Concern New Zealand supports the call to ‘Step up’ for Youth Week 2011 by strengthening a connection with a young person.
"We're asking
grandparents and other older people to take on board the
‘Step up’ message that is the theme for this years’
Youth Week: 21 – 29 May. For younger people this means
being heard, and taking responsibility; for older people it
means stepping up to be more involved in the lives of the
young people around us” says Liz Baxendine, President of
Age Concern New Zealand.
“Youth is a time when there can be many pressures in your day-to-day life, and many important decisions to be made. We’ve all been there and know what it’s like. Taking opportunities to spend time with young people, listening to them without judging, and supporting them by being good role models, are all ways we can ‘Step up’ “says Mrs Baxendine.
“With families being geographically spread out these days we can’t always be together face-to-face. Fortunately technology like Skype and texting is helping to bridge this gap. Many Age Concerns also help to promote contact between the generations by organizing activities that bring young and old together, like texting classes, poem competitions, and fun social occasions”
Age Concern urges you to ‘Step up’ and strengthen a connection with a young person in your life.
