Iwi Fishing Interests Advanced By Leader
The Treaty Tribes Coalition has thanked the outgoing chair of Te Ohu Kaimoana, Ngahiwi Tomoana, for his efforts to advance Iwi fishing interests.
Treaty Tribes Coalition Chairwoman Maria Pera says even before taking up the role of Chair of the Trust, Ngahiwi had worked enormously hard to advance the Iwi fishing sector.
“Ngahiwi was a driving force behind the inaugural Maori Fisheries Conference. He continued to promote this important event in his role as Chair of Te Ohu Kaimoana, and now we see the conference firmly ensconced in the fishing industry calendar, with the next one scheduled for May 23 and 24 in Nelson.”
“We are grateful for these types of initiatives and the many others promoted by Te Ohu while Ngahiwi was Chair. Those achievements included the support given to various Iwi to form Coastline agreements with each other, Aquaculture agreements between Iwi and the Crown and many other successful projects.”
Maria Pera says Ngahiwi will continue to have a huge influence on the future advancement of the fishing sector and his skills will be keenly sought by many Iwi and Maori as they grow their businesses.
“He has enormous skill, having represented Treaty Tribes Coalition at the United Nations. Treaty Tribes Coalition looks forward to even greater involvement with Ngahiwi in determining Treaty tribe strategies.”
