Stellar Trust calls for early adoption of the Law Commission’s Review of Misuse of Drugs Act
The Stellar Trust today called on Government to promptly adopt the Law Commissions recommended changes to the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975.
“We strongly support the proposal for a pilot Drug Court. If run on similar lines to those overseas, they will provide addicts with strong incentives to address their problems, rather than repeat their criminal behaviour”, Burton Shipley, Stellar Trust, Chairman said.
Stellar Trust strongly supports the review’s emphasis on Police focusing on traffickers, manufacturers and pushers and called for the full weight of the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009 to be used against offenders to reduce the financial appeal of illegal drugs activities.
“The Stellar Trust also urges ordinary Kiwi’s to continue to help the Police in apprehending those involved in the illegal drug trade. We encourage those with information to call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 where they can leave information absolutely anonymously and dob in the traffickers, manufacturers and pushers”, Mr Shipley said.
“The Stellar Trust looks forward to the prompt development of the ideas expressed in the review”, Mr Shipley said.
