Game Animal Council advantageous for NZ
The new Game Animal Council will benefit both the valuable international hunting tourism sector and conservation, the Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) says.
TIA supported proposals for the Game Animal Council from the outset because it would be environmentally, recreationally and commercially advantageous to New Zealand, TIA Advocacy Manager Geoff Ensor says.
“We are convinced that the council will bring New Zealand game management into the 21st century. Game animals are here to stay, so we need to find the best means to manage them while protecting New Zealand’s natural environment. We must ensure the positive opportunities that game animals offer are not lost,” he says.
Several thousand international visitors enjoy hunting in New Zealand each year. Many of them are high net worth individuals who spend a significant amount during their stay.
Providing high quality, safe experiences with a strong conservation ethic is fundamental to the success of New Zealand’s tourism industry, Mr Ensor says. The Game Animal Council will support these aims by promoting and enforcing ethical standards of behaviour for hunters and professional hunting guides.
“If New Zealand is to remain a world leader in adventure and outdoor tourism, we must ensure all activities operate to the highest standards. The council will have a crucial role to play in achieving this for the hunting sector.”
