United Kingdom Parliamentary Delegation to visit Parliament

Six members from the UK branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and representing both Houses of Parliament, are visiting New Zealand from today until 26 February 2011, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr The Rt Hon Lockwood Smith, has announced.

“New Zealand and the UK share similar issues at a national level, such as climate change, the formation of Governments, and the maintenance of heritage architecture. This visit will enable us to share experiences on these areas”, Dr Smith said.

The delegation will meet with, among others, the National Council of Women in order to learn about the way in which political parties manage their selection of candidates to promote the increased political representation of women.

The delegation will also explore New Zealand’s experience with coalition governments, its energy policy—including alternative forms of energy—and the impact of climate change in the Pacific region. It then heads to Christchurch to view restoration work currently under way in the aftermath of earthquakes that have hit the city.
