Wellington March for Egyptian Democracy

Wellington March for Egyptian Democracy

12noon, Saturday 5 February @ Midlands Park, Lambton Quay, central Wellington

A demonstration will start outside the Vodafone building near Midlands Park and we will make our way past parliament to the US embassy. Bring placards, flags and banners.

This is going to be a peaceful show of support for the Egyptian people and also to demonstrate to John Key and the US Ambassador that the people of New Zealand are with the Egyptian people and not with the dictator Mubarak.

John Key openly supports the Mubarak regime, the recipient of the second largest amount of US military aid after Israel, which murders and tortures its own citizens. Key's position is an embarrasment to those who believe that democracy and freedom are not platitudes but values & ideals to fight for.
---

Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets calling for President Mubarak to step down after his 30 year autocratic rule.

The protesters have been met with extreme violence as Mubarak orders the police and the military to quell the street protests. Over 100 have been killed and many more injured. Still Hosni Mubarak refuses to listen to his people.

Mubarak has ordered a complete shutdown of the internet and moblie phone networks in Egypt in order to stop protesters communicating with each other and the outside world thus leaving them unprotected.

Vodafone, have played a complicit role in the violence, helping the Government shut down the internet and text messaging, yet are blaming the internet blackout on “problems” with their service, refusing to acknowledge their total and utter compliance and therefore support of a corrupt, violent and undemocratic regime.

The USA has issued statements regarding the unrest in Egypt but has stopped short of actually calling for Mubarak step down.

In the face of the brutality of the Egyptian military and the callousness of the US imperialists, we need to urgently show our solidarity with the Egyptian people and to demand that the US end its military support to its puppet dictators and regimes in north Africa and the Middle East. The revolutions in north Africa, show that peace and freedom in the Middle East is possible and that no superpower, US or Israel, can stop a population that have decided to struggle without end for liberation.

This protest is supported by Unite Union Wellington and Socialist Aotearoa.
