New Zealand should support Egyptian protests
New Zealand should support Egyptian protests
Alliance Party media release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday 31 January 2011
The Alliance Party supports the people of Egypt in their struggle for basic rights and democratic freedoms.
Alliance Party co-leader Kay Murray says the New Zealand government should do more than issue a travel warning to New Zealanders, and should publicly announce their support for the protesters.
“Egyptians have made it abundantly clear that they are no longer prepared to accept the oppression and inequality rampant in their country under the current authoritarian regime. They want democracy and they President Mubarak to resign immediately.”
It is up to the international community, including New Zealand, to support them and to assist them to set up the democratic government they are demanding.
“There are already over 100 people dead, and there is no need for any more loss of life. It is time to speak out.”
