National selects Jami-Lee Ross as Botany candidate
National Party President Peter Goodfellow is pleased to announce Jami-Lee Ross will be the Party's candidate in the Botany by-election on March 5.
"It was a difficult decision given the very high quality of candidates who put their names forward. The calibre of the nominations underscores real excitement and enthusiasm within the Party as we move into election year. I want to thank everyone who has taken part in the process."
Newly selected Botany candidate Jami-Lee Ross says he is humbled by the selection and is delighted to have been given the opportunity to fight for the privilege of representing the people of Botany.
"For Botany this by-election is about giving the community a strong voice in John Key's Government so it can deliver a growing economy, more jobs, and critical infrastructure like broadband, roads, and rail. It's also about ensuring our families can feel safe in their communities and their homes with law and order policies that give victims a fair go and dispense justice to those who offend against us.
"I will be a fierce advocate for commonsense management of the economy that does not leave our kids up to their eyeballs in debt. I strongly support the Government's efforts to blunt the sharp edges of the recession for vulnerable Kiwis, and greatly admire the way the Prime Minister has faced up to some extremely testing times in his first two years."
"While Botany is considered to be a strong National seat, I head into this by-election taking nothing for granted and knowing that I have to earn the respect and trust of an electorate that was served so well by the hard-working MP Pansy Wong."
Mr Ross has paid tribute to the other nominees and knows how hard they have worked to reach the final round of the selection process.
"It's not a simple box ticking exercise. All of the other candidates had fantastic credentials. I am humbled and delighted to have won final selection and plan to meet as many people in Botany as I can in the coming weeks."
