Press Release: Seven Due in Court After Drug Raids
Police today executed a series of search warrants at addresses in the Hawkes Bay together with the headquarters of the Hells Angels gang in Mt Eden Auckland.
As a result seven people are now due in front of the courts facing charges relating to the sale and distribution of methamphetamine (‘P’).
Napier Area Commander Inspector Kevin Kalff stated that the arrests, which are the culmination of a two month operation would “severely disrupt the flow of Methamphetamine entering Hawkes bay”
Furthermore Police stated that this was “indicative of the thriving drug trade that reaches into every corner of New Zealand and is not just confined to the big cities”
Former Detective and managing director or drug education and consultancy company Methcon Group Limited stated that whilst he agreed with Inspector Kalff regarding the spread of the drug into our regions and congratulated the Police on the successful termination of the operation, he doubted that the flow of the drug would dry up.
“Where there is demand for a drug there will be supply. Methamphetamine is just like any other commodity and relies on the basic economic equation of supply and demand”
“The fact remains that Methamphetamine is the most addictive drug and therefore addicts find it incredibly difficult to go without the drug “
“Until we see resources placed into demand based initiatives such as hard hitting advertising campaigns and mass education programs we will continue to see New Zealanders targeted by dealers”
Mr Kirk also stated that media reports of the arrests highlighted to him the naivety that exists amongst large sectors of the public.
“I heard a radio interview with a neighbour of the hells Angels who stated that he was ‘really surprised with the arrests and never thought that anything like that (drug dealing) would have been going on and that it was no worse than a normal student flat’. This for me sums it up”
“ New Zealanders have to accept that these gangs are not just motorcycle enthusiasts and that the drug trade relies on a corporate or quasi military type hierarchical structure in which gangs such as the Hells Angels are parked firmly at the top of a rotten smelly heap”
“Until we (the public) realize that the gangs with the real power are the ones that are not demonstrative but actually lurk in the background, we will continue to live in a society infused with insidious drugs such as Methamphetamine”
“This is not a fad that will simply go away by itself”
