Gloomy NZIER outlook holds fears for jobs
CTU Secretary Peter Conway says the gloomy NZIER Report that the economic recovery has reversed adds to union concerns about the employment outlook. The NZIER's December 2010 Quarterly Predictions published today foresees ‘wintry economic conditions this summer’.
Peter Conway said: “The prospects for sustained and strong economic growth do not look good. But even if there is a lift in the economy will it be jobless growth? And if jobs do increase, there is the likelihood that many will be left behind.”
“Recently, the Government made positive comments about a 480 drop in those on unemployment benefit. But there are 48,000 more people on unemployment benefit than in May 2008 before the recession. The Government was too hasty to withdraw support for programmes like Community Max and needs to focus again on jobs, jobs and more jobs.”
“There are 243,500 jobless people in New Zealand including 150,000 officially unemployed. There are also 110,000 part-time workers who would like to work more hours. Claims from the Government that it has ‘an unrelenting focus on jobs’ need to be backed up with action.”
