Defiance over blood thirsty chases
Defiance over blood thirsty chases
Candor Trust
In
relation to the driver critically injured on the Eastern
Hutt Road Candor Trust reiterates that such chases are not
on. You can't enhance road safety by racing drivers who
won't stop, and the policies of most civilised countries
acknowledge this by banning chases over traffic offences.
The fact of the matter is that 30 seconds is a long time for
something to go wrong at speed, and most chases that kill
are all over and done with in up to 2 minutes.
It is
outrageous that Police have been told to stop using the
words "pursuit" or "chase" in media communications, and
instead to refer to "fleeing drivers". What models of taking
personal responsibility for the outcome of decisions that
they should never be allowed to make.
Police apparently
want to make it clear the responsibility for pursuits and
their outcomes was on drivers who fled instead of stopping
when asked.
What they are really doing is trying to gloss
over their tragic use of a policy that has been banned for
safety reasons overseas, so that the quota system can be
pursued with zeal. And a flagrant and frightening disregard
for offender and Public safety. No wonder our statistics are
among the world's worst - welcome to the Wild
West.
