NZ First Policy On Anti-Smacking Welcomed
Family First NZ is welcoming comments made by New Zealand First regarding the anti-smacking law.
“Party leader Winston Peters has indicated this weekend that if elected, he will continue his opposition to the
anti-smacking law. Mr Peters was one of the few brave politicians who listened to NZ’ers and voted against the flawed
and unpopular law at the time it was rammed through. For his party to focus on the amendment of this law as a policy
heading in to the 2011 General Election is welcome news,” says Bob McCoskrie, National Director of Family First NZ.
“NZ First is right to say that this is an issue of democracy and respecting the views of almost 90% of NZ’ers. Mr Peters
is also correct to say that the law has done nothing to address the real issue and causes of child abuse, and has simply
targeted law-abiding parents attempting to raise great children.”
“It is a breath of fresh air to hear a political leader willing to make this a key policy heading in to the 2011 General
Election.”
“Parents deserve to be heard and respected on this issue,” says Mr McCoskrie. “It appears that New Zealand First is one
of the few political parties willing to listen to them.”
