Horizons elects new chair

Horizons Regional Council last night elected Murray Guy as the new chairperson to lead the council for the next three years, taking over the role from his predecessor Garrick Murfitt who was unsuccessful in his bid for the Tararua seat on council.

Mr Guy was elected to chair by a two seat majority over challenger Bruce Gordon.

This is Mr Guy’s second term as a Regional Councillor and he brings with him extensive experience from the commercial and rural sector.

“I am a successful local businessman, tertiary qualified with 30 years experience in land and forest management, and property development. I will continue to provide a practical balance between environmental policies, business and sustainable growth for the Region in the term ahead,” said Mr Guy.

Mr Guy, who described his leadership style as inclusive, firm and fair, last night thanked his council colleagues for their support and committed to being an effective, positive ,pragmatic and reliable chair and regional leader.

Paul Rieger was uncontested in his election to deputy chair. The council will meet again on 2November 2010 to decide the structure and chairs of its committees
