Alfred Ngaro valiant in defeat in Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward
C & R candidate Alfred Ngaro, valiant in defeat to Labour's Councilor-elect Richard Northey, addressed a large crowd of
supporters who had gathered in Panmure last Saturday to celebrate the journey of one of the most exciting and exuberant
campaigns ever seen in the local body elections.
“We may be down but we’re not out. We fought a strong campaign with passion, intelligence, fun and we walk away with our
integrity intact. I am so grateful to have had the staunch support of my family and friends, my campaign team, C & R colleagues, MP Peseta Sam Lotu- Iiga, a tremendous group of volunteers and the many people who contributed to this
cause with donations, prayers, words of encouragement and advice. A very special thank you to the Maungakiekie-Tamaki
constituents who had faith in me and gave me their vote of confidence. As a newcomer to the political realm and having
received 7418 votes in a 3 month campaign, small on resources but big on heart, grit and determination is a mammoth
achievement in itself and a cause for celebration despite the outcome. We will build from here for we have climbed this
mountain of opportunity and have seen the other side. It is only a matter of time that we will enter into this land of
possibility and prosperity”, Alfred said.
Campaign Manager, Denise Krum said that Alfred was the “dream candidate-cream of the crop.” He has the credentials and
the caliber to work cooperatively with others and across party lines. Sadly, the super city and Maungakiekie-Tamaki will
lose out on having an intelligent, articulate, innovative, young leader like Alfred at the table.
Alfred added that it was exciting to see new representatives like Chris Makoare and Josephine Bartley at the local board
level and hopes they will be given the opportunity to lead this Board so as to reflect the diversity of communities
within the Tamaki area. He also hopes that the team-elect in the overall Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward will work just as hard
as they campaigned so that they respond effectively to the issues and needs of the community and the future challenges
ahead.
