1207 - Vollie Report, leaky

Simon Maude brings us today’s special report. Simon had the phone glued to his ear this morning as he investigated the National government’s fruitless, or witch-less “witch-hunt” for those responsible for leaking classified information.

1210 - Peter Murnane, Waihopai One

Right after that Father Peter Murnane joins me in the studio to discuss the implications of the civil case the government has now brought against him and his 2 spy-base popping colleagues. The so-called Waihopai three have already seen off a criminal case - acquitted of burglary and willful damage under the controversial “claim of right” defence (they were saving Iraqi lives, see). But now they’re basically being sued for more than a million dollars in damages. And judging by their, shall we say, homely attire, this is money they don’t have.

1225 - Pablo Gorondi, Hungary Sludge

Following that we cross to Hungary where a torrent of toxic red sludge has burst forth from a holding dam at an aluminium plant, inundated the towns close by, killed people, forced the evacuations of hundreds and threatens to become the worst ecological disaster in Europe for decades. This morning I spoke to (above) an Associated Press journalist who’s right at the scene. It’s a pretty harrowing picture he paints.

1235 - Dear Science

Peter Griffin at the Science Media Centre is here for our regular feature Dear Science at 12.35. Peter’s all over the Nobel prizes today which have honored folks who helped folks have babies, others who developed something really really hard, and others who figured out a way of manipulating carbon atoms.

1245 - Educating Boys with Joseph Dreasson

Then to round out the show, (above) a leading international educator in boys' education, spoke to me this morning about the semi-alarming news that the educational achievement gap between boys and girls at an NCEA level is growing. It’s been big for ages now, and it’s getting bigger. Joseph told me nothing short of a shift in our cultural mind-set is needed to reverse the trend, and he had some pretty interesting ideas about making it happen.
