Special voting follows non-delivery of voting packs

A special voting booth is being established in Mangere East following the non-delivery of a small number of Auckland Council election voting packs in the area.

Auckland Council Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske has arranged for a special polling booth to be open from 12 noon tomorrow Thursday to 12 noon on Saturday at the Mangere East Library in Massey Road, Mangere.

“This booth will only hold the special voting packs for the local area and will assist local electors who may wish to vote but did not receive their ordinary voting pack or have not yet requested a special vote by phone,” says Mr Ofsoske.

All other voters in the inaugural Auckland Council election who wished to vote by post should have popped their voting documents in the post by 5pm today to ensure their votes are counted.

"After that, they should hand deliver their voting documents to one of the following venues if they want to have their say on Auckland's future direction."

Voting documents can also be dropped off at the Auckland City Council service centres on Waiheke and Great Barrier and the Rodney District Council service centres in Helensville, Kumeu-Huapai and Warkworth. On election day, you can also return your votes to any of Auckland's public libraries.

Three days out from the close of voting, 39.4 per cent of voting documents have been returned compared with 27.2 per cent at the same stage of the voting period during the last election in 2007. The highest voter turn out continues to be Great Barrier Island on 61.1 per cent followed by Waiheke on 50.8 per cent. However strong figures are now also being seen in places like Warkworth (47.6%), Howick (45.9%) and Orakei (45.6%). The lowest are Henderson-Massey on 34.3 and Kaipatiki on 34.4 per cent.

Preliminary results will be published on the Auckland Council website www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz. as soon as possible after midday on Saturday 9 October The official results will be announced once special votes have been checked, in the week commencing 11 October.
