Age Concern – linked in with communities

Age Concern is your first port of call when you and your family/whanau need information, advice or support. 

The organisation is using its annual Age Concern Awareness Week to highlight the importance of its connections throughout local communities.
The week, which includes International Day of Older Persons celebrations tomorrow, Friday 1 October, ends this Sunday.

Local Age Concerns are spreading the word about what’s on offer to seniors and their friends, family and caregivers.

“Age Concern has the big picture on what’s out there for seniors in their communities.” Age Concern New Zealand president Liz Baxendine says.
"Our organisation provides services itself, and also knows what other local organisations are doing.  We work alongside them to help older people get what they need, when they need it.  

“Our social and educational activities can help people broaden their networks, make new friends and enjoy active and healthy ageing.
“For example, we bring young and old together to promote better understanding between the generations.  Participants in these activities have lots of fun, share what they know and in the process stereotypes and misconceptions are broken down.“

Many local Age Concernsprovide an Accredited Visitor Service, to link volunteer visitors with older people who need more company, and some have Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention services. 

In addition, local Age Concerns can support people dealing with government, local government and health agencies when they need help.

“We are your first port of call for information, advice or support. Give your local Age Concern a call or visit during Awareness Week and get to know us better,” Mrs Baxendine says.
