Government funding for heritage welcomed
The New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT) is delighted at today’s announcement that the Government will contribute
up to $10 million to assist in the repair of Canterbury’s heritage and character buildings, says its Chief Executive
Bruce Chapman.
Mr Chapman said the announcement by the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Chris Finlayson would add certainty to,
and strengthen the resolve of, heritage building owners committed to restoration and strengthening following the
earthquake. Earlier this week the NZHPT agreed to contribute $250,000 to the Heritage and Character Building Fund to
help retain Canterbury’s heritage landmarks.
The NZHPT will work with local agencies on the allocation of the Government funding.
“The Government’s financial commitment recognises the value of our built heritage and the high regard with which
heritage is held by the wider community,” Mr Chapman said.
