Leadership needed on water

Leadership needed on water

Mayor Len Brown has welcomed the announcement that water charges are forecast to drop to Manukau levels from July 2011 as an endorsement of the pricing system in his city.

“I have been focused on keeping water rates as low as possible during my term as Mayor and have delivered no increase in prices in the previous two years,” says Len Brown

“My council delivers the lowest average water and waste water charges across the region. I want to bring the same focus to all of Auckland.

“This announcement is basically an endorsement of the leadership we have delivered on water.

“Families across Auckland cannot afford big increases in their water rates. Strong leadership in the new Auckland Council will be needed to make sure these savings are achieved.

“Voters across Auckland should ask who they can trust on delivering low water costs and retaining public ownership of the water company. My record has been to keep costs low for families, my opponent has allowed some people to pay up to $1,000 for their wastewater.

“I have also argued against the effective privatisation of our water company through the signing away of control on a 35 year lease. Auckland City endorsed the proposed change.

“We need proven leadership to keep water rates affordable in the supercity. The people of Auckland can trust me to deliver these savings.”
