1700 strong turnout at Auckland worker meetings, ahead of employment law debate

1700 workers packed two Auckland venues this morning to discuss changes to employment law that are being debated in Parliament this afternoon.

The workers, members of the National Distribution Union, attended meetings in Manurewa and Penrose to hear about the proposals, and take part in planning a community response to them, NDU General Secretary Robert Reid said.

“These changes to work rights are significant, and will affect all working New Zealanders,” he said.

“The turnout today was nearly twice what was expected, and this indicates to us the depth of feeling about these proposals.”

“At our meetings, workers have committed to let other workmates and family members know about National’s proposals, and to make sure they participate in a community campaign against them.”

Today’s gatherings were the final of 31 meetings throughout the country over the past month, which have seen over 4,000 NDU members in attendance.

The NDU is active in the Council of Trade Unions’ Fairness at Work campaign, and union members have been ensuring their friends and families were aware of this weekend’s rallies, Robert Reid said.
