Botany Town Centre Hosts Breastfeeding Challenge

Media Release August 2010

Botany Town Centre Hosts National Breastfeeding Record Challenge

Botany Town Centre mothers are gearing up for the sixth annual Big Latch-On, in support of World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), as part of a national attempt to beat the current New Zealand record for the number of women breastfeeding simultaneously.

On Friday 6 August at 10.30am, Botany Town Centre and the Mother and Baby Breastfeeding Centre will host a group of mothers at Botany in a collective nationwide maternal attempt to beat the figure of 1,299 – the number of women who simultaneously breastfed in last year’s Big Latch-On.

The Big Latch-On 2010 takes ‘Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding’ as its theme in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Innocenti Declaration, which called for implementation of the Ten Steps in all maternity facilities. Over the past 20 years, more than 20,000 maternities in the world have fully implemented the Ten Steps and have been certified by the Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI).

Botany Town Centre Senior Marketing Manager Desiree Clark says, “Our team is proud to welcome back the Big Latch-On to Botany Town Centre. While our centre is feeding and changing friendly, this is a great opportunity for us to further support mothers who visit Botany Town Centre.”

With the support of Parent Centre and Botany Downs Maternity Unit, mothers and babies will have a relaxed and comfortable environment in which to participate, on Botany Town Centre’s Sunset Terrace.

Participating mothers have a chance to win spot prizes and giveaways and will each take home a beautiful maternity bra from HOTmilk Lingerie.

The Big Latch-On starts with a welcome morning tea at 10am, with the record attempt starting at 10.30am at venues around New Zealand. For more information, or to register, visit www.womens-health.org.nz
