Now is your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in the future of your district.
Nominations for candidates wishing to stand in this year’s local authority elections have opened.
Warwick Lamp says anyone wishing to stand as a candidate for the Rangitikei District Council or for the Taihape or Ratana Community Boards should get their nominations in now.
Positions up for election in the Rangitikei District include:
Councillors (11 in total)
Mayor (1)
Bulls Ward (2 councillors)
Hunterville Ward (1 councillor)
Marton Ward (4 councillors)
Taihape Ward (3 councillors)
Turakina Ward (1 councillor)
Taihape Community Board (4 members)
Ratana Community Board (4 members)
Nominations close on Friday 20 August.
"Local government and local democracy are fundamental to our society, giving the opportunity for everyone’s voice to be heard. The mayor and councillors take on a leadership role in the district representing the views of the community.
“We need a range of people of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to represent the diversity of our community.
“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”
Voting papers will be sent out from 17 September 2010 and must be mailed to the council by midday on Election Day, 9 October 2010.
For further information on standing as a candidate visit your council’s website www.rangitikei.govt.nz , the elections portal www.elections2010.co.nz, www.lgnz.co.nz or contact your electoral officer.
