Rodney ready to move on - mayor
Rodney Mayor Penny Webster says it is now time for the district and its residents to move on and make the best out of being part of the new Auckland Council.
Mrs Webster made this call after a last-ditch move to exclude Rodney from the supercity and establish it as a new unitary council was voted down in Parliament yesterday.
Mayor Webster also thanked Labour MP Darien Fenton for introducing the Rodney Local Bill into the House. “Rodney District Council is grateful to her for sponsoring it into Parliament and allowing our voice be heard.”
“As I have said all along, we support the concept of democracy in Rodney and that is why we proposed this bill. It was based on the majority sentiment of our community who told Council – via two independent surveys – that they did not want to be part of the supercity,” she explained.
”However, Parliament has now rejected this call and it is time to move and focus our attention on ensuring the best possible outcomes for the Rodney district and its residents in the new Auckland Council structure.”
