Jevan Goulter to Stand for Mayor Of Whanganui

The last few days have been a great time for thinking, planning, strategizing and creating new ideas and plans for the future

After a lot of discussions with friends, politicians and business professionals this weekend I have decided that I am going to announce my candidacy for the Whanganui Mayoralty.

With the incumbent Mr Laws standing down and choosing not to seek re election I have realised that there is so much work that needs to be done in Whanganui. What Whanganui needs is an option for a fresh solution to hold the chains to the city. It needs to be steered in a positive direction moving forward. The problem that Whanganui has at the moment is that the only contenders putting their hands up for the top job are all councillors pushing around the same policies with the same attitudes that Whanganui already has.

I am not born nor am I bred in Whanganui, however I have spent a lot of time there and realise the problems that it has with the potential that it holds. One example that I thought about that people should use to apply to myself is this.

Remembering when I was at High School, a position for the Principal arose. Now of course this is the position of the person who will effectively run the school , of course both Deputy Principals, and the Assistant Principal applied for the position. They knew the school, they had worked there for a long time, they had known the students. However the position was filled by somebody completely different from outside the school to come in and take on the head role! I realised that this was because they wanted new skills, new ideas, new innovative plans to better the schools current position. Why hire from somebody whose skills and attributes you already have and are utilising. I apply this method to the council and councillors standing for the position of Mayor. We already have these peoples skills and know what their attributes are so why not bring in something new to better Whanganui.

I’m promising a positive direction and positive image for Whanganui!

I want to get my hands dirty so plan to attack the Health problems in Whanganui and start doing everything we can in regards to the hospital and health organisations on a local government level.

We need to look at how we can stimulate the economy in Whanganui and the key answer to that is the Whanganui River.

I believe that we need to introduce more great events into Whanganui for the community and to attract visitors from neighbouring areas. I love the arts, performance, culture anything stimulating creative and exciting and we definitely need more events happening in Whanganui !

The safety of residents and the feeling of being safe is a large one as well. When I am elected I plan to work very closely with the police in cleaning up the city. There has been some good progress made in the past and I believe that needs to continue on! The last poll I saw showed that almost %50 of people that live in Whanganui did not feel safe in their city at night. I plan to change this and improve the safety and well being for the residents of Whanganui.

I want to promote a positive, productive and presentable image to the rest of New Zealand for Whanganui and show that we can be a strong community that works together.

I also promise when elected not to use the mayoral car to tow concrete mixers around the town!
