Council candidates’ information evening on
Monday
ROTORUA 14.07.10: Do you
think you’ve got what it takes to stand for a role on your
district or regional council?
Maybe as mayor? Possibly as a district or regional councillor or as a member of the Rotorua Lakes Community Board?
Before you finally make up your mind there’s an opportunity to find out more on this year’s local government elections at a special candidates’ information evening. It’s taking place at the Rotorua District Council (RDC) Civic Centre on Monday [19 July] from 6pm to 7.30pm, and any aspiring candidates are welcome to attend.
The evening will feature three presenters: former mayor Grahame Hall talking about the workload and commitments required for the various positions; RDC chief executive Peter Guerin with a brief presentation about the governance requirements of the roles; and RDC electoral officer Peter Christophers covering the election process including details on how prospective candidates can submit nominations.
Mr Christophers said the candidates’ evening provided an excellent opportunity for people who have already decided or are still making up their minds about standing for a council role, to find out more on the various positions covered by the elections and how they can become candidates.
For the next three year term, Rotorua district voters need to elect a mayor, 12 district councillors and four representatives on the Rotorua Lakes Community Board.
Nominations open on Friday 23 July and close on Friday 20 August, with voting papers being sent out to enrolled residents between 17 - 22 September. Election day is Saturday 9 October this year, with progress results expected to be announced later that day.
Candidate nomination forms will be available at the information evening on Monday and are also available from the council's electoral officer at the RDC Civic Centre.
