PRESS RELEASE:
For immediate release
Report from NPT Review Conference 2010
and Book Launch of Security Without Nuclear Deterrence
On Wednesday, 2 June, 6pm – 8pm at the Grand Hall of Parliament, Phil Twyford (New Zealand Chair of Parliamentarians for
Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament) in association with Ban All Nukes Generation Aotearoa and The Peace Foundation
will host New Zealand delegates and members of the civil society who attended the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
Treaty Review (NPT) Conference 2010, at UN Headquarters in New York, to inform on the current situation of Nuclear
Disarmament.
Presenters include:
•Dr. Kate Dewes (Advisor on the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board for Disarmament matters)
•Robert Green (Former Royal Navy Commander and Author of ‘Security without Nuclear Deterrence)
•Dr. Roderic Alley (Chair, Wellington Peace Foundation Committee)
•Nicky Wagner (MP, Deputy Chair of PNND)
•Terence O’Brien (Former NZ Ambassador to the UN)
•Mayra Gomez (Senior Programme Officer, PNND)
•David Mullock (Intern for PNND)
The panel and book launch fit into a wider context of the recent disarmament movement. The United States and Russia
recently signed a new agreement to reduce their nuclear warheads. The US hosted the most important summit of world
leaders since 1945, to which Prime Minister John Key was invited because of New Zealand’s nuclear free status, to tackle
the growing issue of keeping the raw materials for nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorists.
On Security with Nuclear Deterrence Sergio Duarte, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs says “I commend this book to all readers – experts and
generalists alike – who wish to gain a deeper understanding of nuclear deterrence, surely one of the most controversial
ideas of our time.”
Due to security restrictions, if people are planning to attend please RSVP to james.kennelly@parliament.govt.nz by Monday 31st of May. For more information please visit: www.enact.org.nz, www.bang.org.nz and www.pnnd.org
