Youthline hits the streets of
Wellington
24.5.2010
Members of 'Youthline
Wellington' will hit the streets this week in a fundraising
effort to coincide with Youth Week.
Youthline Wellington’s Communications Coordinator Katie Weastell believes the success of the non-profit organisation lies in the passion and commitment of its volunteers.
“Most of our volunteers are aged between 18 and 25. They give hundreds of hours each year on top of their work or studies to support New Zealand’s young people,” she says.
The strong 'youth for youth' focus within Youthline provides unique opportunities for young people throughout the country* to connect with other young people via a free, confidential and non-judgemental phone counselling and free text service (txt 234).
As one of Wellington’s favourite youth organisation Youthline turns 40 this year, and Coordinator Vicki Beachen says four decades of service to the city highlight the value of the work performed by the organisation.
“Nationwide, Youthline receives over 2,000 calls and 10,000 texts a month. The organisation plays a unique role in providing a safe and supportive place for young people to talk about a range of issues without fear of judgement. We receive calls and texts on a wide range of issues from family and relationship problems to bullying, school work and sex," she says.
Youthline Wellington
will hold its annual street appeal on Thursday May 27 from
7am to 6pm. Volunteers will be collecting throughout the
city during the day, with a main base set up in Manners
Mall. Collectors in the Mall will be joined by a host of
buskers who will provide free entertainment for the public
during the
day.
