Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher 15/04/10
95bFM's Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher 15/04/2010
Coming up on the show:
1215 -
Bevan Hanlon, National Secretary of the Corrections
Association
The Government has announced that New
Zealand’s first privately built, managed and operated
prison will be up and running in 5 years in South Auckland.
According to Bill English this will mean a saving of 10 to
20 percent on the total running cost of the facility.
However, there are those concerned about the plan and one
such critic is Bevan Hanlon, the National Secretary of the
Corrections Association, and he joins me at the top of the
show to discuss the issues surrounding public-private
prisons.
1235 – Maryan Street, Labour List
MP
Staying with Government critics, I joined on the
Wire by Labour MP Maryan St who believes National’s
scheduled 4 million dollar aerial mineral survey of New
Zealand is a shambles and illustrates a lack of planning.
I’ll ask her to go over the survey plans in more detail,
and enquire how they might antagonize the conservation
movement.
1315 – Bunny McDiarmid, Green Peace
Executive Director
Then on the show I’ve
got Bunny McDiarmid to discuss a Greenpeace rally coming up
on May 1, protesting Government plans to mine conservation
land. Stay tuned to find out more details on how you can let
your voice be heard on this important issue.
1330 – Dear Science, Peter Griffin Science Media
Centre
In bFM’s weekly look at science and
technology Peter will take us through an announcement due to
come out the Environmental Risk Authority at 1pm today on
whether Agresearch can proceed with GM research on sheep,
goats and other farm animals. Peter’s also noticed
Telecom’s trading freeze, which he says indicates an
announcement from them could be on the way, which hopefully
will come out by the time we run the feature. As well as
this we’ll discuss plans by the South Korean Government to
set limits on the amount of time children can spend gaming
online.
1340 – Papercuts, Pennie Black (thanks
to MagNation)
Papercuts is a feature on the Wire
where Pennie Black takes you through the world of magazines
and other serial publications. This week, Pennie reviews
‘Qompendium’ and we’ll play an interview she did with
Qompendium’s editor and founder, Kimberly Lloyd.
