Councillors ask Auditor General to Investigate Monte Cecilia decision
Two Auckland City Councillors have asked the Auditor General to investigate a Committee decision to designate and
purchase the Monte Cecilia School land
In their complaint, Councillor Cathy Casey and Councillor Glenda Fryer, both voting members Auckland City Council’s
Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee state that they are concerned that the officers failed to notify the Committee of
a resolution of the full Council passed on 14 December 2000 which required the designation over the Monte Cecilia School
land to be uplifted, leaving the school on its present site.
They argue that since the 14 December 2000 Council resolution was never revoked, the Committee may have acted
unlawfully.
The complaint asks the Auditor-General to rule on the legal status of that Council resolution and investigate why the
resolution was never actioned by staff.
The councillors also ask that while the matter is being investigated, the Auditor General request a stay on any
proceedings by Council to re-designate the Monte Cecilia School land or progress the purchase of the land from the
Catholic Diocese of Auckland.
“We believe that a Committee of Auckland City Council may have acted unlawfully in relation to designation and purchase
of the Monte Cecilia School. land. We have tried and failed to have our concerns addressed with Auckland City Council so
now we seek the urgent help of the Office of the Auditor-General.”
